Okay, but that doesn’t help me, “economy do better,” doesn’t help me. The cost of living in this country has only gotten more expensive with poorer quality goods and services over the course of my entire adult life. Maybe you benefit from this, as many middle class Canadians do, I do not. Canada and the US are firmly on the path to fascism, and this is not some deviation from that. Trumps image of fascism has proven too unpopular for its own use, but exceptional at enabling liberals to claim some level of inevitability and desirability in their politics, both of them would prefer that I die rather than threaten capital whatsoever.
I wonder if anyone benefits from a system wherein a sufficient number of people feel compelled to tolerate an obviously bad choice because the “only other choice” is worse. Hmmmmm.
I immigrated to Canada in 2007 as an adult and it felt great here. Cost of living and housing was manageable and I felt like I could have a great future then it started going to shit almost immediately and when 2020 hit even before COVID it started feeling like absolute shit and it has been getting worse and worse. Benefits cut and things getting more expensive.
Yes, and that’s topical in more than one way, Mark Carney was the governor of the bank of Canada during the '08 crisis. At the time, his response of lowering prime and encouraging spending was viewed as risky, but it is also credited as the reason that Canada fared better than other G7 nations. That policy is also what facilitated the housing bubble we are now reliant on for our fucking economy to function.
Hence why I am adamant that this is not some necessary evil or delay of the inevitable.

I wish we had Carney controlling external affairs and trade and NDP handling everything internal. Every domestic policy he’s made has sucked, but he’s done such great things with trade relationships and is a very skilled diplomat.
I know this isn’t a popular take here, but how is Canada supposed to avoid a recession without exploiting our resources?
Carney was brought in to strengthen our economy, and he’s doing just that. Would I prefer it to be done without increasing pollution? Of course. But that’s just not how this works.
I think we in Canada all need to decide here. Do we want as many full bellies as possible until climate change destroys us, or do we forego full bellies in hopes climate change is delayed by 7% (our contribution to global fossil fuel extraction). Tough choices.
We don’t avoid a recession, we embrace it. People don’t need money. They need food and housing. I have money, I don’t have enough food and housing.
Let the economy crash into the ground, as long as I can have food and housing. And yes, we can still have food and housing in a recession. And yes, we can in fact have more than we have now. I understand somebody is already mad at me, ready to say it doesn’t work that way, but a recession absolutely would lower the price if housing which is what the majority of many Canadians income.
And I will say it right now: I don’t care at all if right ritch people lose money. I don’t care at all.
I’m not sure you understand what forcing a recession entails, and I haven’t heard of any plan. You can instead use the economy to bully those you’re angry at. If you have money, invest only in things you believe in and starve the rest. Poison those companies you hate for others too.
While we don’t exactly need money, we will always need some kind of metric for trustworthiness, and that’ll become the problem when money is gone. We need to incentivize people to work towards our social goals, or not even farmers would feed more than their families. We need money for now, but redistributed would certainly be better.

I’ll say it again- money isn’t real, we don’t need it, I don’t care about capitalism or rich people. I really dont. If they all just… went away… I wouldn’t care. I hope they do ;)
I think we should learn the lesson that covid taught us is possible. Shut everything down, shelter in place, guarantee food and housing (as you say), medical care, and education, but everything that is not absolutely essential can go to hell.
Like covid, the difficulty is getting enough other countries to go with the same plan to make it work. I don’t think austerity for Canada would fix the world if the neighbours aren’t doing it too.
You get it! I’m not saying it would be painless, but we don’t need most of the stuff we think we do. We don’t need phones or cars or airplanes or diamond rings. We need food and housing. Even in a recession we have more than enough “money” for that.
I don’t care about rich people things. Shelter and food. Anything else is a luxury.
It’s not one or the other and we have to stop falling into this black and white, one or the other thinking. It’s reductionist at best and ignorant at worst.
I hope the court says no. What a dick.
Carney hates the law when it comes to protecting the environment. We need proportional representation now for real democracy.
