xmpp. don’t matrix, it causes selfhosting-phobia for normies because its ui sucks. i had a friend try matrix with me for a while and now they’re never trying another foss messenger again unless its proved to be very good.

there’s few old scripts (mostly for mailing list archive usage) that takes mbox input and outputs html. not pretty but they could work in this case. searching is another issue though

i just put git repos in a dir on my server and use ssh to push/pull

if you need webui theres cgit.

i can say its not very user friendly tho…

last i checked it was very difficult to run your own instance (including voice chats)

google killed the ability to search in js-disabled browsers like those

recently saw this article here, i’m not sure if ecosia is a good solution now. their results seem mostly identical to ddg/bing too though it’s occasionally better than them for some reason

qwant is good, but they geoblock certain countries including mine since 2023 or so. having to use proxy/vpn for just searching really sucks

not a proxy, it directly uses google cse on client side so it’s no better than directly using google

yeah, i search with ‘before 2023’ to filter AI slop often

google (and few other engines) keep giving me errors, and search results mostly empty due to timeouts (or even with no error, there’s just only few results that are completely unrelated to the query)

ddg gets results from bing, startpage is the one that gets results from google

ddg is my primary right now, it absolutely sucks for korean queries sadly

i don’t have any complex ‘webapp’ hosted on www. just static files and few simple cgi scripts. i keep my httpd and sshd up to date. that seems to be good enough

there’s nothing important on the server anyway, so i don’t have much to lose even if i get pwned

i always use curl icanhazip.com for checking my external IP… iirc some “IoT” devices also use it for some reason

the xiaomi ir remote app (proprietary ofc) has presets for basically anything i ever needed a remote for. i have it on my primary phone so it has saved me on a few occasions.
