None of this is new. Yet Canada, writ large, walked into the stadium without studying the game film of the opponent. Had we done so, little of what just transpired would have come as the surprise it apparently is. We would have known that the Americans would slip in an amped-up no-trade-with-China poison pill. We would have been prepared for it to arrive at the last minute, and we’d be working on contingency plans. Businesses could have readied (stockpiling goods, for instance). The media would have known, and they’d be hyperventilating less. Instead of a shock, it would have been a known worst case. We wouldn’t feel singled out. Our reaction would be calmer—we got punched when we weren’t expecting it, and we’re upset.

Either “writ large” is doing a lot of work there, or that’s just unfair. Anybody both not MAGA and following events was expecting this. Our negotiators definitely included.

The bit later on about communicating with the public suggests he did mean everyone else. To that, a whole lot has been written and said already about why it everything had to be secretive. Trump didn’t make a deal, but he wouldn’t even have gotten close if we’d been calling him out the whole time, and then you’d have the Conservatives saying Carney didn’t even try.

I too am a rare rural Lemming, and I have a used Chinese phone running a custom ROM. It looks like the export models tend to have a full compliment of bands, and 13 is listed for all of them. If you literally get a domestic Chinese phone model custom imported, sure, you’ve made your bed a bit, and might have to sleep in it. I’d be shocked if they all cost more new than Samsung, as well.

If you don’t like China either, yes, you do you. There’s a case for it. They’re kind of like America geopolitically, and not just becoming authoritarian. Sony also had something Lineage-compatible, as of last I checked.

Amazon is really really hard to avoid if you need something the local stores don’t sell. I’m going to give AliExpress another try, but it wasn’t promising the last time.

That’s literally every area in Canada. Except where there’s no services in the first place. Dangerous (by Canadian standards) also tends to go for anywhere a homeless person might want to be, because homeless people are good targets and sometimes also offenders. OP can’t escape themselves.

So that’s services, or at least government/nonprofit services. The opportunities part isn’t even visible to richer people, at least not the same opportunities. I’m not talking about a program with a name, there, I’m talking about, like, a dumpster that you’re allowed to root through, or a nice spot in an alleyway. A job that asks few questions, or just a possible friend.

If Ottawa or London is better, hopefully someone local will pipe up. It’s not going to be Thunder Bay or Huntsville.

Probably head straight for Toronto. There’s more opportunities and services, and it’s not like housing prices matter in that situation.

Sooo what would the equivalent of that be today? The solution was to separate the warring parties with peacekeepers - separating the parties in this modern conflict amounts to invading and occupying Israel/Palestine, and I don’t even think Canada would win that war. And, Israel’s ally was European colonial powers just pursuing colonial interests, so they could be reasoned with, as opposed to the ideological-religious morass that’s driving the US.
